Let this serve as a wake-up call for everyone who has been putting off home improvement projects. The blazing summer heat is right around the corner, you owe it to your future self to take care of these tasks now. Here are some sooner-than-later maintenance ideas you can get to work. Sooner than later.
1) Paint – Especially with south and west-facing walls, paint not only makes your house look better, it protects siding, wood etc from ultraviolet light. If your property is properly painted, exterior materials can last for years.
2) Get You Lawn Ready – In case you haven’t paid attention to my other 1,500 articles on lawncare, it’s a lot easier for you to prepare your lawn for the brutal heat than regrow it after the damage is done. Make sure trees and shrubs are trimmed and pruned, dead leaves and stalks have been removed, and your sprinkler system is working properly.
3) Clean Your Gutters – I know we can go weeks, even months, without seeing any rain in the summer, but the last thing you want to do during the summer heat is to stand on your roof and blow out your gutters.
4) Stain Your Deck – Just like painting your house, the cumulative damage from weeks and months of sun can destroy your deck. Even composition decks can have years taken off their lives.
5) Pressure Wash – Winter can leave all kinds of dirt and grime on concrete, siding, patios, sidewalks and decks, and given the myriad fronts that have blown in since the winter, dust is everywhere.
6) Have Your HVAC Serviced – It cannot be stressed how important it is to have your air conditioner ready for summer. Make sure a licensed technician inspects, cleans the coils, checks coolant, and makes sure no circuit boards are failing. And make sure to change your filter every two months, it’ll add years to the unit!
