Islamic Architecture was influenced by the Roman, Byzantine, Mesopotamian and Iranian styles Muslims encountered throughout their storied history.
Privacy is greatly valued, often featuring high perimeter walls and solid gates surrounding interior courtyards; the homes often use window shades for the same reason.
Islamic architecture shies away from ostentatiousness often found in European architecture but it’s far from bland, juxtaposing symmetrical square structures and flat roofs with soaring archways, decorative elements such as colorful mosaic tile, Arabic calligraphy, wood lattice work on windows, Arabesque shapes, spacious balconies, with sensibile yet tasteful landscaping. They are both modern and timeless.
